There are so many “what ifs” thoughts that go through your brain. What if you get sick? What if your loved one dies? What if you forgot to lock that door even though you already checked that it was locked? What if you secretly like the thoughts you have even though you logically know they are against your values and actively distress you? You’ll do anything to avoid your thoughts and to prove that you wouldn’t do those things and it helps for a while. But then you notice that you have to do more to avoid your thoughts or do more rituals to get that temporary relief. Your life keeps getting smaller and smaller and the urge to escape your thoughts becomes stronger and louder.
